The Double Shadow: A Clark Ashton Smith Podcast

Episode #22: “The Door to Saturn” pt. 1

A transcription of this episode is now available.

This week, we’re doing the first half of Smith’s “A Door to Saturn.” Our reader is @JoeScalora, a longtime listener and the first non-guest reader we’ve had for the podcast.

We’re doing a giveaway of The Weird, a fantastic compendium of Weird tales. It’s huge and we’ve all enjoyed it, although none of us has finished it. This copy was given to us by a publisher to give away.

What we’re asking you to do to enter to win is just to draw Tsathoggua, as you see him, and send it to us. You can use our contact page, Twitter, Facebook, or our forums to submit your entry. We’ll be posting them, but we’ll choose randomly, so make a valiant effort! To help those of you with less artistic talent feel better, here are ours:

Ruth’s Tsathoggua

Phil’s Tsathoggua

Tim’s Tsathoggua

The contest ends March 20th!

Music by Erdenstern. Next week, we’ll continue with the second half of “A Door to Saturn.”

As an ardent fan of both Tsathoggua and stoner metal, I can’t even tell y’all how much I enjoyed this episode.

I am in full agreement! All three of those drawings are quite entertaining but the bloodshot eyes of Phil’s rendition are hilarious.

Just discovered this podcast. I am so glad this is a thing.

  3. Ollie says:

James Ambuehl wrote a story based on Smith’s “Shadow of the Sarcophagus”

Tim’s Tsathoggua looks as if He were struck by a hangover. Who knows the hobbies and vices of those Old Ones?

  5. M. S. Corley says:

Whats the deadline for the contest? I’m almost done but if its passed already I won’t rush to finish him right away.

  6. Kevin says:

I realize I’m 18 months late, but has anyone ever suggested that this story influenced Vonnegut’s Sirens of Titan? I saw a number of surprising parallels while reading The Door to Saturn.
